New hobby?

I really don't need a new hobby. I don't have enough time for the ones I already have. But...

When we visited Colonial Williamsburg, we got to watch a basket maker. Fascinating and it didn't seem that hard. They sold beautiful handmade baskets in the gift shops, but they were outrageously expensive.

They also sold kits which included all the supplies so you could make your own basket for like $15. So I bought one.

I sat down the other day to see what I could do. Here's what I started with.

Getting started was a little challenging, but I figured it out.

Here's the basket when I finished weaving. Just ignore that huge mistake at the bottom. I was too far along when I noticed and I had already started over once and I didn't want to start over again! That's the back anyway - why didn't I take a picture of the other side?!

Here it is completed.
I think I did pretty good for my first try.

Yesterday I found myself perusing basket making websites. I'm not sure that's such a good idea. I've got a pretty big project on my knitting needles right now, and I found a sock pattern that I want to try, and I'm still scrapping my vacation pics, and I'm halfway through a really good novel, and we're starting school in 10 days...

Well the talent does run in the family! I've made almost 300 from a Christmas tree ornament to the 'baskinette' that Reagan slept in until she was 9 months old:)

When I taught in a middle school in Las Cruces, our team made baskets with the kiddos. I got so excited one year that I rushed out to make another at home. I came across it a couple weeks back in my closet. Fun. Yours looks awesome.

Great basket! I loved making one this summer, but I promised myself that I won't get started on a new hobby - nope, won't do it!!

I love your basket! How cool. I want to take the kids to Colonial Williamsburg one day too. I guess I didn't realize you homeschool too. Cool!

I don't know why I've never stumbled upon your blog before.
