Stinky giving

I am participating in Kristen's One Day to Give.

I am a giver. God has blessed us abundantly and there are often times when I just know I'm supposed to give to someone or some organization. Now the giving I'm going to tell about here is not huge, but I just might be able to make you laugh or at least smile.

We have a dear lady in our church who has custody of her 5 year old grandson Tyler. He was recently diagnosed with leukodystrophy, a degenerative disease of the brain. He is now at Duke University to undergo a stem-cell transplant. Our church decided to do a fund raising enchilada lunch to help with the expenses. The organizers asked for us to sign up to purchase the ingredients. I don't remember what all was on the list, but I wanted to pick what was easiest and required no work. I know, I'm awful. So I signed up to bring 4 packages of Velveta cheese. Then I felt convicted. I have the time and resources - I could do more. So I also signed up to bring 10 onions - chopped. No problem, I thought, I have a food processor. I can just chop them in there and avoid all the crying normally brought about by chopping onions.

I bought the cheese and and a bag of onions and planned when I would take care of those onions. The afternoon of the onion chopping arrived and I decided I'd better look at the instructions for the seldom-used food processor. Turns out you have to chop the onions (into large pieces) before you chop the onions! Bring on the tears - and stinging and stinking! So I peeled those onions, chopped them, and chopped them some more in the food processor. Well, half of them anyway. Then I had to run to Walgreens for more zip-lock bags. When I got home my house did not smell very good. I lit candles then finished up the chopping and chopping, put the chopped onions in ziplock bags, put the ziplock bags in a walmart bag, and put the bag in an empty drawer in the bottom of the fridge. Well, I'm sure you can guess, now the fridge does not smell so good. That evening I transported the cheese and onions to the church. Now the van does not smell so good.

So I did my part. And what did I get for it? A stinky house, a stinky fridge, a stinky van, and the blessing of helping a family in need.

P.S. We raised almost $3,000!!!

I have also experienced that 'chop before you chop' issue. It can kinda make you wonder why you're getting the processor dirty, huh? I guess any chopping you don't to do makes it worth it.

That's so glad you made that much money. I'm sure that family is grateful. Good for you and your friends! :)
