My Birthday Wish

Today is my 40th birthday. Really?! Can I really be 40?!

So a few weeks ago Greg asked me what I wanted for my birthday. I didn't tell him what I really wanted. I was afraid I might be disappointed again.

You see, almost five years ago I really thought God was leading us to adopt a little girl from China. I was absolutely convinced that was what we were supposed to do. Greg was not convinced. He just couldn't do it. After a few months of talking about it (actually me trying to talk him into it), I gave up that dream.

But I've never stopped thinking about adoption.

And in the last few weeks, as I have been approaching this big birthday, adoption has really been on my heart again. I have been praying, crying, and hoping that maybe Greg would change his mind.

God has really been working on both of us lately as to what we should be doing to really live out the gospel. We don't believe God calls us to live comfortable lives only for ourselves. And our life is comfortable.

Part of my reasons for wanting to adopt are selfish. Yes, I do want to parent a girl! But it is so much more than that. I want to provide a loving home for a child in need. I want my boys to see that being a Christian means more than just going to church. I want my life to make an eternal difference.

So, I finally got up the courage to have this conversation with Greg last Saturday morning, knowing that this would be the end of my dream once and for all if he said no.

But...he said YES!

We have decided we will pursue an adoption from foster care, hopefully a toddler or preschool age girl. Although international adoption is still very dear to my heart, we just don't think it would make sense financially for us since we have college expenses to consider in just two years. And there are kids right here in our state who need homes too.

The boys are thrilled. I overheard Jonathan talking to Benjamin this morning about how fun it will be to have a little sister.

Now the fun begins. Yesterday, I sent an inquiry to our state agency. I should receive a phone call sometime this week to get the process started.

So, I got my birthday wish!!!

Happy 40th!! You look way younger than that.

When I came over from my blog after your comment, I thought you were going to tell me you were moving or pregnant. I love this news--so happy for you guys!

I love that you are both willing to go out of your comfort zones.
